What is the Qantas Frequent Flyer program and how does it work?

Qantas Frequent Flyer is the loyalty program of Qantas. It’s considered to be Australia’s largest loyalty business.¹

A Qantas frequent flyer membership allows you to earn points when you spend money on eligible flights, hotels, travel, cards, banking, shopping and more. These points can then be used for flights, food, wine, and other products.

You can also earn Status Credits that open up exclusive benefits if you continue to stack up Qantas points.

Earn Qantas points

The Qantas frequent flyer program offers a number of ways to earn Qantas points. Following is a breakdown of the avenues where you can earn Qantas points and the program’s partners:

Flights

Earn points on eligible flights with Qantas. Since Qantas is a founding member of oneworld, an airline alliance, you can also earn points when you fly with one of oneworld’s member and partner airlines including²:

  • Jetstar
  • Air France
  • Air New Zealand
  • American Airlines

  • Cathay Pacific

Hotels and travel

You can earn points when you book hotels, accommodations or travel experiences through Qantas’s dedicated portals of Qantas Hotels, Qantas Activities, Qantas Cruises, Qantas Holidays and Qantas Valet Parking. The program also has partners that let you earn points. Some of them include³:

You can earn Qantas points with certain credit cards, bank accounts, home loans, investments and insurance⁴.

  • Credit cards: There is a wide range of Qantas Points earning credit cards available from companies like American Express, ANZ, Citi, Commonwealth Bank, HSBC, NAB, and more.
  • Bank accounts: Bankwest and Qudos offer Qantas Points earning transaction and savings accounts.
  • Investments and loans: Buying or selling shares, or a loan from La Trobe Financial, Leveraged Equities, or other partners can earn you points.
  • Qantas also has a dedicated Qantas Money portal with financial offerings.

Phone, utilities and services

Red Energy and Optus phone customers can earn Qantas points by paying their bills. You can also earn points on Solargain’s solar products and services⁶.

Fuel and cars

Earn Qantas points for every litre of fuel or every dollar spent on eligible BP products. Booking cars and other transport with the following brands can also get you points⁷:

Earn Status Credits

Qantas frequent flyer has five membership tiers – Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One. Your membership tier is determined by the number of Status Credits you earn. Status Credits can be earned by flying on eligible Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld member airlines. Status Credits are different from Qantas points but both can be earned at the same time.

You’ll need to take at least four eligible Qantas or Jetstar flights and earn the minimum number of Status Credits in a membership year to move up through the membership tiers.⁸

How to join Qantas frequent flyer program

You can easily join the Qantas frequent flyer program online by following these steps to fill in the required details:

  1. Enter your residential country and your name.
  2. Fill in your contact details like your email address, phone number and street address.
  3. Add the necessary information for security questions and create a four-digit PIN.
  4. Continue to the payment after reading and accepting the terms and conditions. Once all this is done, you’re all set.

How many points are needed for a free flight

The number of Qantas points needed for a free flight depends on a few factors such as the distance you’re planning to travel and the travel class.

You can book a free flight for less than 10,000 points. For instance, you can book domestic one-way flights between Melbourne and Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane, or Melbourne and Canberra, starting from 8,000 Qantas points¹¹.

Where else can you spend Qantas points

In addition to using your Qantas points to book a free flight, you can also use them in the following ways¹²:

  • Combine points and cash to reduce the cost of your flight or use your points to snag an upgrade.
  • Use your points to book hotels, travel experiences and transport.
  • Choose the number of points to use when paying at BP and reduce your fuel bill.
  • Use your points in-store or online when shopping brands like Apple, Bose, Breville, Dyson, KitchenAid, LG, Pandora, Sony, Swarovski, and more.
  • Pay your initial insurance premium from Qantas Insurance with a mixture of points and money.
  • Purchase wine through the Qantas Wine portal with your points.
  • Buy a wide range of products from Qantas Marketplace.

Do you lose Qantas points if you don't use them?

Your Qantas points won’t expire as long as you earn or spend them at least once every 18 months.

Keep in mind

  • If you’re short on Qantas points to use to get a reward, you can purchase them in blocks of 1,000. There’s a minimum requirement of 1,000 points and a maximum limit of 150,000 per purchase.
