Many who are frustrated with the limitations of the American banking system may be wondering if they can send US dollars from inside the US to another bank account in the US without making a pricey wire. 

Or, if you’ve already heard of us, you may be itching to know if it’s possible to make a USD to USD transfer with Wise.

The answer, thankfully, is that you should be able to do that in most cases.

Though it started out as an international service, Wise has expanded to domestic options with alternatives to traditional banking like the Wise multi-currency account. And that’s where we’ll need to begin for that to happen.

How does a Wise multi-currency account help me? Is it different from a regular Wise account?

The Wise multi-currency account is just a fancy way of saying that you can hold money (a balance) inside the Wise system.

How do I get started with a Wise account?

If you don’t already have a Wise account. You’ll wanna go to wise.com and sign up.

The next step is activating your Wise account. As a heads-up, Wise is a regulated financial body, which means we’ll need to confirm your identity with several key pieces of verification before you can fully activate your Wise account.

Once you’re all set up and have finished the verification process, you can activate your Wise account and begin holding a balance in dozens of currencies — sending your money all over the world. Or just inside the US.

Now that I have my Wise account, how do I make a US dollar to US dollar transfer?

To send money within the US with Wise for the first time, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your account at wise.com
  2. On the left navigation bar, click on balances
  3. From there, choose Activate a currency
  4. Choose USD from the dropdown menu
  5. Once dollars are activated, click Add USD to top up your US dollar balance (either via your debit/credit card or by deducting the money from your US bank account)
  6. Now Send USD
  7. From there you’ll need to enter your US recipient’s US bank details (full name, address, ACH routing number, and account number).
  8. Pay for the money with your USD balance (the money you’re holding in your borderless account) and then you’re done. The money should be in your recipient’s bank account within 1-2 business days.

How do I send USD internationally?

With a Wise account, you can also send US dollars internationally. It is one of the cheapest, easiest way to send, receive, hold, and convert money around the world — up to 6x cheaper than a bank.

To send money internationally with Wise, just click the send money button on the left navigation bar. Here, you can select where do you want to send the money from.

Then, you need to select ‘International’ and choose your desired currency.

Click Continue and follow the steps on the screen.
