TransferWise has a network of bank accounts in many of our supported countries, such as the UK or Switzerland.
However, in some countries it isn't quite as easy for us to establish an account, or we can only have “one-way” support (e.g. we can only send the currency there locally).
For these countries, we have foreign currency accounts in Europe. This means deposits can be sent there via SWIFT international payment. Also, we can deliver certain currencies via international transfer to the recipient.
It means we can bring our mid-market rate goodness and peer-to-peer tech to more currencies and countries.
As some background, the SWIFT international payment network is one of the largest financial messaging systems in the world, supporting money transfers to over 212 countries.
SWIFT payments usually take 3-5 working days.

TransferWise can deliver CAD and JPY via SWIFT to bank accounts in Canada and Japan.
When part of the TransferWise process involves the SWIFT system, there’s a few things to bear in mind:
Sending TransferWise a deposit via SWIFT will likely incur a sending fee from your bank.
Make sure to inform your sending bank that although our account is in Europe, there’s no conversion necessary.
The SWIFT payment system relies upon payments being forwarded by intermediate banks. Sometimes these banks can deduct a nominal handling fee.
For us to handle SWIFT payments, our pricing changes slightly. We charge our usual 0.5% fee, plus an additional SWIFT handling fee. The full breakdown can be found here.
We cannot deliver a specific amount to the recipient.
