Senior Technical Accountant – Tallinn

As a financial technology service/company moving billions of GBP of customer money in over 70 countries, TransferWise must have bulletproof financials. We need timely, accurate and scalable financial data to be compliant with regulations and make accurate business decisions inside the company.

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Accountant to join our largest office in Tallinn, Estonia. Working together with the Accounting and Controlling teams, you’ll help to deliver sustainable growth and scaling of the finance function, to ensure financial compliance and preparation of accurate and reliable financial reporting. This role will be key to achieving our mission of Money Without Border, to maintaining close control of the financials and to ensuring positive relationships with stakeholders and regulators. 

Your mission:

Work closely together with the Chief Accountant and Finance Operations Lead to build and maintain the backbone of the accounting function. What you’ll typically be doing:

  • Onboarding of new accounting processes: get understanding of the new process with the business (for example, launch of new product/service, investment or hedging using new type of instruments, company split/merger etc.), investigate the accounting standard requirements (primarily IFRS, but also consider local GAAP requirements), create a policy paper, develop an accounting manual together with the Accounting team, and help put in place effective controls.
  • Ownership of complex accounting areas: there is  a wide variety of accounting challenges requiring both strong data processing skills (e.g. automatic multi-currency consolidation) and fluency in financial reporting standards (e.g. share based payments, business combinations)
  • Helping us mature processes and controls: We operate a global web of companies situated on 5 continents, process millions of transactions each month and none of it existed just ten years ago! Come share your knowledge and experience and help us keep up with the expanding business, make sure we have strong, mature and scalable accounting policies and control environment.
  • Becoming a key contact for the external financial auditors: preparation of the annual financial statements, own the monthly and annual consolidation process, walking the audit team through the company’s business, coordination of auditors’ requests inside finance and other TransferWise teams, defending management judgements and policies and much more.

This role will give you the opportunity to:

  • Become second-in-command to our global accounting team and back-up for the group Chief Accountant.
  • Challenge your technical skills, knowledge and abilities in a wide variety of accounting areas.
  • Shape the development and transformation of the Finance function in Europe’s most valuable fintech company.
  • Share your expertise and help to up-skill and develop the accounting team, and perhaps lead a small team in the future.
  • Travel internationally on occasion to other offices, such as London.

A bit about you:

  • Significant experience combining both financial audit/advisory and management accounting/financial controlling.
  • You have prepared consolidated financial statements under IFRS.
  • You have been working in a fast-moving multinational environment, collaborating  with teams in other countries or time zones with different cultures.
  • Ability to work independently, assume responsibility and make your own judgement. Be prepared to take ownership over complex new areas and solve problems with no or very limited guidance.
  • Fluency in reading and interpreting International Financial Reporting Standards, ability to develop and implement accounting policy.
  • Advanced data processing skills (expert Excel is a must), ability to understand complex spreadsheets and create efficient, reliable calculations with built-in controls, easy scaling and updating capabilities. Experience working with large volumes of data.
