Legal Counsel - Business – London

We’re looking for an exceptional Legal Counsel to join our Legal Team in Shoreditch, London and be at the forefront of our Business customer growth and our mission.

You’ll undertake a wide range of legal matters relating to our day to day and strategic initiatives. You'll be helping build the Enterprise product and Bank Partnership product which are growing business lines for TransferWise. Alongside a primary focus on the Business teams and products, you will also provide support on global matters.

Your mission:

  • Structuring, drafting, and negotiating commercial agreements with Bank Partnerships, API users and enterprise customers. Localising these agreements to meet the regulatory requirements in the jurisdictions TransferWise operates (Americas, APAC, MEA).
  • Understanding the real risks to the business and advising on the operational impact and practicalities of those risks.  Building contract processes and negotiation playbooks.
  • Working closely and building relationships with multiple business units across the Company and across markets, to advise on a wide range of legal matters and ad hoc problem as they arise, including financial regulation and consumer protection, privacy, marketing standards, market entry, partnerships.
  • Reviewing current practices and developing and maintaining templates.
  • Staying up to date on legal developments and advising on future-looking initiatives.
  • Mentoring and upskilling the business teams, making life simple and easy.
  • Ensuring proper processes and document retention.
  • Working with the Legal Team to support the wider needs of the company, for example training.

A bit about you:

We’re looking for someone passionate about payments, fintech or finance and with an eye on the future.  You’ll have:

  • Previous firm or in-house financial services experience, focusing on payments and card processing.
  • EU/UK qualified or equivalent legal/regulatory experience.
  • Proven aptitude for commercial contract structuring, drafting, and negotiation.
  • Strong interest and experience in financial services regulation including PSD2, consumer protection, data privacy and payments.
  • A focus on impact, through trusted relationships and attention to detail.
  • Clear communication, project coordination, and management skills, including for partner relations.
  • An understanding of how start-ups work - how to balance between maturity in corporate governance and operations, and the practical considerations of fast growth and scaling.
  • A sense of camaraderie and good humor while under pressure or tight deadlines.
  • Wisdom, a world view and talent for thinking outside the box.
  • Professionalism and high integrity.
