We’re making a positive, irreversible change in the world of finance. Together.

Data Scientist - Verification – Tallinn

Since 2011, we’ve had a clear mission: money without borders. Built by and for people who live global lives, we’re just at the beginning of our story and we’re growing at an incredible pace.

To continue giving our customers fast & convenient transfers and fuel our KYC engine, we are looking for a talented Data Scientist to join our Verification Team.

As a Data Scientist, you’ll focus on understanding the Compliance & Risk-based approach, how to make sure we verify customers using convenient means i.e personal doc automation, ML tools, and building better processes for Operations.

The Verification Team is currently 20 people strong and fully cross-functional, consisting of Operations, Product, Analytics, Engineering, and Compliance. We need to make sure money moves quickly to wherever our customers need it, and managing the compliance risk of customer on-boarding and lifetime journey is vital to creating a positive impact - being a part of a  collaborative, mission-driven team will be the first step in moving closer to making this happen.

What you’ll be doing

  • Own the Problem. Have full accountability for Compliance Risk fluctuations, understanding our customers’ behavior, solve cost minimisation, and work with our diverse team to get those ideas up-and-running.
  • Automate. Model the impact of various scenarios, pick the best to implement and create real impact.
  • Develop and run our vital Verification scaling report.
  • Drive impact by giving the rest of the team ownership - ensure Operations and Compliance are focussing on the right projects, and provide them with the tools they need.
  • Educate other teams around TransferWise in how to manage Risks and Automated solutions for customer identity
  • Collaborate with developers to ensure our systems and calculations are robust.

Experience you’ll need

  • Rock-solid data skills - you know how to work with large datasets and build complex models using SQL, Python, or R.
  • Excellent communicator - you can summarise the complex, and present data visually in a way that makes people say “got it!”
  • Ownership - you see your ideas all the way through to customer impact
  • Collaborative - you work well in a team environment, and know how to have an impact through others
  • You’re comfortable making considered but firm decisions when there’s no right answer, and living with the impact of these decisions
  • Our team is spread across 2 offices, so do expect a lot of video-calls and some travel.

Great, but not necessary

  • Experience or a keen interest in Fraud, Compliance or Risk assessment
  • Machine learning, scenario modelling or other statistical modelling experience
  • Experience in software development or product management

How this will actually happen

How a Data Scientist  in the Verification Team will actually create an impact is well.. completely up to you.

This is a huge opportunity and at TransferWise, we believe in trust and autonomy. So while we can outline what we want to achieve, and what skills we think we’ll need to get there, we know this can change and that the narrative is up to you. Also, we know that someone doesn’t have to be the perfect fit to truly make a difference.

If you feel like you’ve got the skills & experience, the need to grow, and most importantly, the desire to create a meaningful impact in the lives of millions, we’d love to hear from you.

Some important stuff we would like you to know

To meet our regulatory obligations as a licensed financial services company, TransferWise needs to take background checks on all new hires, which may include Criminal and Credit checks. Please discuss with the Recruiter if you have any concerns regarding this process.

At TransferWise we believe in fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. Therefore, we want to make sure that our recruitment process is accessible to everyone. So if you need any reasonable adjustments – at any point in the process – we’ll do our best to help. Just let us know what you need on your application form or reply with your request to the email we send you after you have applied. You might need a reasonable adjustment if you’ve got a disability. Or maybe you live overseas, and you’d prefer to meet us over Skype.

Please don’t send anything to the adjustments address if you’re a recruiter, or if you’re making a speculative application. We do work with recruiters from time to time – but only through LinkedIn. And we only accept job applications when a position is actually open. So you’re better off just checking the recruitment pages regularly.
