Compliance Specialist - Japan – Tokyo

We’re looking for a Compliance Specialist to join our growing Japan team to be based in Tokyo. We launched TransferWise in Japan in 2016 and since then our small but mighty team have been taking things from strength to strength. But there’s still heaps of potential to grow and many problems to solve.

The role is a unique opportunity to ensure that our compliance program in Japan runs smoothly and therefore help millions more customers save money by using TransferWise. The key areas of this role are to provide consistency of the Compliance program, with a focus on financial crime, between Japan and global compliance operations, while also ensuring that the Japan entity is meeting its obligations by communicating with our local regulators.

Your mission:

  • Review our compliance operations program to assess compliance with Japanese regulations
  • Ensure that the Japanese framework remains up to date with applicable laws/ statutes, which will include the review of policies and procedures
  • Develop and deliver internal compliance training programs and develop the local knowledge of all teams
  • Communicate regularly with our local regulator in Japanese (KLFB) to ensure everything is up to date and maintain a positive relationship
  • Inherit and evolve current local compliance program process, reporting, escalation and system design
  • Mentor compliance operations teams in Europe and Asia in order to support a robust global compliance regime
  • Liaise with local legal offices and challenge local regulations by looking at different angles to make our service better for our customers
  • Assess and provide support to product and operations teams on new regulatory models

This role will give you the opportunity to:

  • Train and educate local and cross regional teams on Japanese compliance and be responsible for championing a healthy compliance culture
  • Play an integral and integrated part of the Japan product team and have a direct and positive impact on our customers and mission
  • Travel to work with teams in other offices as well as to meet various partners and regulators when needed

A bit about you:

  • You’ll have solid experience in a compliance department of a Japanese financial institution
  • You’ll have excellent knowledge of of regulations such as “Payment Services Act”
  • You’ll be fluent in Japanese and English
  • You’re a great relationship builder with non-compliance teams, like operations or product
  • You’ll have a clear understanding of relevant Japanese legal and regulatory framework for fund transfer service businesses, including Fraud/AML requirements

Some extra knowledge that would be awesome:

  • You might have knowledge of the 外為法、国調法、犯収法 regulation.
