Compliance Specialist - Japan – Tokyo

We’re looking for a Compliance Officer to join our Japan team to be based in our Tokyo office. We launched TransferWise in Japan in 2016 and since then our small but mighty team have been taking things from strength to strength. There is potential to grow and many problems to solve.

The role is a unique opportunity to ensure that our compliance program in Japan runs smoothly and to have a direct and positive impact on our customers and mission. The key areas of this role are to ensure consistency of our Japan business by working with our internal teams and our local regulators, in particular, on financial crime compliance.

Your role:

  • Be responsible and accountable for compliance
  • Ensure that the Japanese framework remains up to date with applicable laws/ statutes, which will include the review of policies and procedures
  • Evolve current local compliance program process, reporting, escalation and system design
  • Represent our compliance program to our regulators (KLFB and JFSA) and build solid partnerships
  • Liaise with local legal offices and challenge local regulations by looking at different angles to improve our service for our customers
  • Mentor compliance operations teams in Europe and Asia in order to support a robust global compliance regime, and support the teams on projects where needed
  • Develop and deliver internal compliance training and develop the local knowledge of all teams
  • Assess and provide support to product and operations teams on new regulatory models

A bit about you:

  • Solid experience in Group Compliance, Operational Compliance or Financial Crime departments of a financial institution, card scheme or fintech company
  • Good knowledge of of regulations such as “Payment Services Act”, Forex Act, Crime Act. (i.e.  資金決済法、外為法、国調法、犯収法など)
  • Ability to understand regulatory wording in Japanese and English and ability to communicate clearly. (You will need to communicate with local regulator in Japanese and team members in English/Japanese.)
  • Strong relationship builder across all teams in the business, and with our regulators and partners
  • Ability to spend two months onboarding with teams in Singapore and Tallinn offices.
  • Interested in moving away from traditional compliance and challenging yourself!
  • Legally authorized to work in the Japan. Sadly we cannot support visas for this role.
