We're about to launch the card in the US, too.
Here are some tips to help you get started.
Leave the conversion to us
If you spend money in a currency you already have in your borderless account, we’ll deduct the amount for free.
If you don’t have the currency in your account, we’ll automatically convert the amount for you. We’ll take it from whichever available balance has the cheapest conversion fee. So there’s no need to worry about converting money before travelling.
Always choose the local currency
Sometimes, ATMs, shops, and online stores are sneaky ㅡ they try to charge you more when you withdraw cash or buy something abroad. They do it by offering to charge you in your home currency, then marking up the exchange rate.
Avoid these hidden fees by always choosing to be charged in the local currency of where you are.
Withdraw up to 200 GBP/250 USD for free
You can withdraw up to 200 GBP, 250 USD, or your currency’s equivalent, every 30 days for free. After that, we charge a 2% fee. You can see how you're tracking against your limits in the app.
Some ATMs charge an extra fee as well, but they’ll always let you know beforehand. We recommend using ATMs associated with banks ― they don’t usually charge extra.
Wait for payments to be complete
When you buy something with your card, the payment will be listed as pending at first. That means we’ve reserved the payment amount, but haven’t debited your account yet. Once you’re charged in full, we'll mark the payment as complete. That usually takes 3–4 working days.
Payments start out as pending because some purchases ― like petrol/gas, hotel reservations, and car rentals ― need to be pre-authorised, then adjusted when the final amount is determined. So, you might see a higher amount at first.
Card lost or stolen?
If you misplace your card or it’s stolen, the first step is to freeze it. You’ll see this option in your TransferWise account under Debit card (both in the app and website). You can unfreeze it anytime, too.
You can also block your card permanently in the app, but not the website. You can do this by going to your account, clicking the arrow next to your card details, and choosing Replace card. Learn more here.
