Guaranteed Rate

What is a guaranteed rate?

A guaranteed rate is exactly what you’d expect - an exchange rate, which is guaranteed for a specified period of time.

We now offer it for all* of our transfers. This is then guaranteed as soon as you finish setting up your transfer. And as long as we receive your money within the specified period of time, then that’s the rate you’ll get. If your money does not reach us in time, we'll still convert your funds as soon as possible, but will use the mid market rate valid at the time of receiving your money.

*if you're sending from JPY, please note the guaranteed rate is only offered once your address is verified.

How long is the rate guaranteed on my transfer?

Your rate is guaranteed for 24 hours for all the currencies except ones listed below.

On transfers from AUD, BGN, BRL, CAD, CHF, EUR, HKD, HRK, JPY*, RON, SGD, the rate is guaranteed for 48 hours.
*if you're sending from JPY, please note the guaranteed rate is only offered once your address is verified.

On transfers:
from CHF to EUR it's 24 hours,
from CZK to INR it's 48 hours,
from DKK to INR it's 48 hours,
from HUF to INR it's 48 hours,
from NOK to INR it's 48 hours,
from NZD to AUD it's 48 hours,
from NZD to BRL it's 48 hours,
from NZD to CHF it's 48 hours,
from NZD to EUR it's 48 hours,
from NZD to GBP it's 48 hours,
from NZD to HRK it's 48 hours,
from NZD to INR it's 48 hours,
from NZD to JPY* it's 48 hours,
from NZD to USD it's 48 hours,
from PLN to INR it's 48 hours,
from SEK to INR it's 48 hours
*if you're sending from JPY, please note the guaranteed rate is only offered once your address is verified.

And if you're adding money to any of the currencies in your borderless account, the guaranteed rate lasts for 6 hours only.

What if my transfer falls on a weekend?

Banks don't process transfers over the weekend, and start paying those out on the following Monday. So, we are not counting weekend hours either.

For example, if you've placed a EUR (48 hour rate lock currency) to GBP TransferWise order on Friday, at 5 PM, your rate will be fixed until Tuesday 5 PM.

Please note GBP is the only exception - most of UK transfers are processed over weekends, so our system does accept those too and will take weekend hours into account. Thus, a transfer from GBP to EUR setup on Friday, at 5 PM, will have it's rate fixed until 5 PM on Saturday.

How many transfers I can set up with a guaranteed rate?

It’s important to note, that we don’t apply a guaranteed rate to an unlimited number of transfers. Transfers shouldn’t be set up if you don't intend to send any money to complete them.

If you create multiple transfers for the same amount, for example 1000€, and then send us a single amount of 1000€ - this will be assigned to the first transfer you created and you'll get the rate for that transfer (whether it's still guaranteed or not).

We reserve the right to limit the number of guaranteed rate transfers on your profile if we notice misuse of this.

It's also good to know that if you remain in any step of the transfer set-up process for more than 30 mins, then the rate will refresh. So your guaranteed rate will have changed slightly, and you'll see the refreshed rate once you finish setting up the transfer.

What if the rate drops significantly?

Finally, when creating a guaranteed rate transfer, you’re subject to a rate limit of 5%. This means that if, in the time between transfer creation and TransferWise receiving your money, the rate drops by 5% or more, we reserve the right to cancel and refund your transfer back to the account the money reached us from.
