Why is there an extra charge for some card payments?

Card networks like Visa and MasterCard charge fees (known as 'interchange') to process card payments. These processing fees vary depending on the kind of card you use and where it was issued. TransferWise pays these fees to accept a broad range of card payments and charge our customers the lowest amount possible.

TransferWise charges an additional 1.7% fee for using business cards for transfers from EUR and GBP. We charge this fee only because the card companies charge an equivalent fee to us in order to process the transaction. And so, we charge the 1.7% in order to avoid losing money when we complete your transfer. We do not make a profit when we charge you in order to use a business card to pay for your transfer.

We charge this fee regardless if the payment is made using a private or business profile, using a business card. You can find a list of the cards that will be charged as a business card by clicking here.

Card processing charges, if any, are added to the transfer amount charged to the card.

TransferWise is actively working with card networks to lower card processing fees as much as possible. In addition, TransferWise does not yet accept card transfers in all currencies and is working to support additional currencies quickly.

Please also note - Some debit cards, including a number of EUR cards, are treated as credit cards by our card processor. This may be because they are not regular debit cards (for example they could be a 'deferred debit' card which doesn't have a pin) and their transactions are treated as a credit payment or a cash withdrawal.

Information related to how to make a card payment and payment limits can be found in our Paying by Card article.
