Why is there an extra charge for some card payments?

For a selection of currencies, you can pay for your transfer by debit or credit card. We can accept Visa, MasterCard and some Maestro cards that have a 16 digit card number.

We can only accept payments from locally issued cards, so for example GBP cards must be issued in the UK, EUR cards must be issued in the SEPA area etc. 

Like a bank transfer, the money must come from your own bank account. So, the name on your card must match the name on your TransferWise account. If it does not, please be aware that your transfer will be delayed and potentially cancelled.

*Card payments for USD are only available in licensed states in the U.S.

**Card payment for JPY are only available after completing Japanese ID and address verification.

TransferWise charges an additional fee for using business cards. We charge this fee only because the card companies charge an equivalent fee to us in order to process the transaction. And so, we charge the fee in order to avoid losing money when we complete your transfer. We do not make a profit when we charge you in order to use a business card to pay for your transfer.

We charge this fee regardless if the payment is made using a private or business profile if you are using a business card. You can find a list of the cards that will be charged as a business card by clicking here.

If you wish to avoid paying the fees related to paying with a business credit card, please make a bank transfer to us.

Debit, Credit and Deferred Debit

It's generally recommended to use a regular debit card to pay for your transfer as credit cards incur a higher fee due to processing costs.

Additionally, depending on your card and issuing bank, payments via credit card (and very occasionally, debit card) can be interpreted by your bank as a 'cash withdrawal' and may carry additional bank fees.

Unfortunately we have no way to know this in advance, but your bank that issued the card should be able to provide more information.

Finally, if you have a 'deferred' debit card - this will also be treated as a credit card when you're paying for your transfer. This is because the banks treat them in the same way as credit cards and charge the same interchange fees for them.

How to Make a Card Payment

When you reach the final step of setting up your transfer, 'How would you like to pay?', you'll see debit card as a payment option (as long as your payment is within the card limit for your currency). 

At this stage we'll ask for -

  • Card number (16 Digits)

  • Expiry Date (MM/YY)

  • CVV/CVC Number (the last three digits of the number printed on the signature strip on the back of the card)

  • Registered address of this card (only requested on first use of the card)

Once you've entered these details and hit 'Pay', you'll be taken to the 3D Secure authentication screen (if this is necessary for your currency).

As soon as you have completed the 3D Secure process and the payment has been approved and completed by your bank,
 you'll be taken to our payment confirmation screen where 'Money Received' should have a green tick next to it. In this case, there's nothing further you need to do.

Unsuccessful Card Payments

If for some reason your card payment was not successful, an error message should appear on your screen with an explanation.

The issue may be linked to the 3D Security of the card, your bank blocking the payment, your type of card not being supported, insufficient funds in your bank account, or a technical issue with the card processing system.

If your payment is unsuccessful (meaning no money has left your bank account), you can try again by re-entering your card details and completing the 3D security process again if applicable.

Payment Cancellation

If you need to cancel a transfer that was paid for with debit or credit card, you can do so by locating the transfer in the 'Transfers' section of your profile, hovering over it and selecting 'Cancel'. Please be advised that, once cancelled, debit card refunds can take a maximum of 10 working days to process, but are usually back in your account in 2-3 working days.

Additional Notes

Security - All your data is encrypted. Card payments are processed via our secure debit card processor. Although your card number may be saved, the CVV/CVC number is never stored. You'll need to confirm this every time you make a card payment.

Maestro/Solo Cards - You should be able to use a regular Maestro or Solo card when paying on TransferWise. It must have a 16 digit card number and, regardless of the currency you're paying in, it must be 3D secure. If the card number has less than 16 digits, or if it contains letters and numbers in the card number, you cannot use this to pay.

Girocards - Unfortunately, as Girocards have no CVV number, these cannot be used to pay in to TransferWise. You can use an account that has a Girocard linked to it to make a bank transfer and SOFORT payment to us instead.

Paying in a different currency or country - While you are able to pay with a GBP denominated card for a EUR payment (or vice versa), we do not recommend this. If you choose to pay with a card which is not denominated in the currency you are sending from, your bank will convert your money before sending it to us. This means that you will also pay a conversion fee from your bank and that your transfer will be more costly overall. You are also not able to pay with a card which is denominated in the correct currency, but not issued in the home country of that currency (e.g. a GBP card issued in Mauritius). 

Potential Fees - TransferWise can also accept some debit cards not issued by the providers listed. With some supported debit cards, there may be an additional 0.3% handling fee due to the different processing methods for these cards. If this is the case and your card is supported, you will be notified of this extra fee after entering your card details on your payment page after setting up a transfer.
