Here you'll find everything you need to know about sending to or from Japanese Yen.

Please note - Japanese banks are closed by law from December 31st to January 3rd every year. Transfers to or from Japan during this period will be delayed.

TransferWise Fee See pricing page Transfers to Japan over 1 million JPY are paid out via SWIFT. Our prices for these transfers vary depending on your sending currency, and can be found on our pricing page

Please note - when receiving SWIFT transfers, the bank receiving those may charge an additional handling fee.

Depends on source currency Transfers over 1 million JPY are sent as a SWIFT transfer, so the receiving bank  may charge an additional handling fee. Please find more info on this here.
Countries we can send to Japan only  
Required Details    
Recipient Full Name Yes We require the local bank account name. Please include first name and surname written in Katakana.

If you're sending over 1 million JPY, we only need the full name in English. 
Recipient Account Number Yes Local account number should be 4-7 digits in length.
Recipient Account Type Yes You can select either  普通(Futsuu) current/general or 貯蓄(Chochiku) savings or 当座(Touza) checking
Recipient Bank Yes Can be entered in English, Katakana, Kanji or by providing a bank code.
Recipient Branch Yes Can be entered in English, Katakana, Kanji or by providing a branch code.
Recipient SWIFT/BIC Code Yes Only for transfers over 1 million JPY
Features    
Amount Lock Transfers Yes The currency you're sending from must also be able to send fixed amounts. Please see our other currency FAQs more information.
SWIFT transfer Yes All transfers to Japan over 1 million JPY will be paid out by SWIFT. You can read more about them here.

Please note - When sending to currencies with a different fee, the higher charge applies.
Time for deposit to reach TransferWise* up to 2 working days Delivery time depends on the sending bank and that TransferWise only receives deposits from Japan within 10AM-19PM JST time (Mon-Fri).

1,000,000 JPY The limit is per transfer, while the amount of transfers a day is unlimited.

Features    
Amount Lock Transfers Yes The currency you're sending to must also be able to receive fixed amounts. Please see our other currency FAQs more information.
Guaranteed Rate Yes You'll receive a guaranteed rate, lasting 48 working hours (2 working days) when transferring to AUD, CHF, EUR, INR, GBP and USD. The guaranteed rate is available for transfers after your address verification has been completed
Business transfers No You cannot send JPY from a business account. However, your recipient can be a business when sending from JPY.
Transfers via app Yes  
ID & Address Verification   Address verification is required for your second transfer, or if your first transfer is over 100,000 JPY.
 

 

JPY Refunds

If you cancel your transfer from JPY when you have already sent the money to us, and the transfer has not yet been completed, then we can simply refund your money back to you.

The refund will also be sent via local bank transfer, so you'll be required to enter the following details for us to send this back to you:


- Account holder name
- Account number
- Bank name and code
- Branch name and code
Account type: 普通(Futsuu)current/general or 貯蓄(Chochiku) savings or 当座(Touza) checking

The refund will then take 1-2 working days maximum to arrive back into your sending account.
