USD Transfers

This FAQ contains everything you need to know about sending money to the USA through TransferWise.

Please note - We cannot support payments that come from any Trust in the U.S.

Additional note - We currently have the following daily and yearly limits on transfers From USD*:

Private individual - $49,999 per day and $199,999 per year
Business - $199,999 per day and $1,000,000 per year

Basic Information   Notes
TransferWise Fee 0.5%* When sending from currencies with a different fee, the higher charge applies.
Delivery time 1-2 working days* *After payout. Please keep in mind that TransferWise can take up to two working days to convert your money after receiving it.
Minimum/maximum amount (per transfer) £1 million in USD* Upper limit is equivalent of £1,000,000 in USD at the current mid-market rate. Lower limit is the equivalent of £7 at the current mid-market rate.
Countries we can send to USA Only For Further Credit payments to U.S. beneficiaries are not recommended.

Reference Yes 10 character maximum, 5 character minimum
Required Details    
Recipient Full Name Yes When sending to individuals, please include first name and surname. There is an 18 character limit. Please use only standard Latin letters (a-z).
Recipient Full Personal Address Yes If your recipient is a business, we'll need the business address.
Recipient Electronic/Check Routing Number Yes Read more about this below.
Recipient Account Number Yes Varies in length, always only numbers.
Amount Lock Transfers Yes The currency you're sending from must also be able to send fixed amounts. Please see our other currency FAQs more information.
Guaranteed Rate Yes You'll get a guaranteed rate when sending to USD from most of our currencies (excluding BRL, CHF, and CZK). This will last for 24 or 48 hours depending on your sending currency. You can see more information in our guaranteed rate article.
Transfers to Brokerages and intermediary banks No We can only send money to an account in the USA that is a final destination of the transfer.
Accepted bank accounts Checking and Saving accounts in the USA only Please note that some businesses may not accept payments via a third party.

Sending from USD
Basic Information   Notes
TransferWise fee $3 for transfers up to $300 Transfers to GBP - Fee is $3 up to $350, 0.85% for amounts from $351 to $10,000, and 0.6% for any additional amount above the $10,000.
1% for transfers from $301 to $5,000 Transfers to INR - Fee is $2.70 up to $300, 0.9% for amounts above this.
0.7% for any additional amount over $5,000 With all other currencies, the higher fee always prevails as seen here. For a more detailed breakdown of USD pricing, see here.
Time for deposit to reach TransferWise* 1-5 working days, depending on how you send money Please note TransferWise usually only receives deposits within UK working hours (9-5 UK time Mon-Fri).
Maximum amount (per transfer)** $49,999* (Personal) *Limit for ACH Bank Debit payments is $10,000 (per order/per 24 hours), all other payment methods support up to $49,999 per personal transfer and  $199,999 for business transfers

Domestic Wire
Additional sending fees Your bank is likely to charge for Domestic Wire and SWIFT Transfers Typically these fees are $15-30, but vary depending on your sending bank. You can check with them to find out their standard fee for wire and SWIFT transfers.
Availability Widely available From all US states. USD can be received from outside the USA via SWIFT payment only.
Additional Requirements    
Recipient's full address Yes -
Your SSN number/ID verification Yes An SSN is requested from every customer sending from the US. Failing this, you will also have the option to provide a US or non-US ID document (except in the case of ITIN's where a non-US document is required). If you do not have an SSN, you will be asked to provide a reason for this.
Guaranteed Rate Yes For payments from USD, the exchange rate is fixed providing we receive your money before 16:00 EST the following working day. With ACH Bank Debit payments, the rate stays locked beyond this period providing a 'successful' attempt is made before 19:00 EST the following day.
Amount Lock Transfers (in) No* *Providing the conditions for the 24 hour rate fix are met, the guaranteed rate would theoretically provide a fixed amount. However, please keep in mind that if the conditions aren't met, a fixed amount is not guaranteed.
Business payments Yes* Please note we cannot support payments that come from a Trust in the US.

USD Refunds

If you cancel your transfer from USD after you have sent your money to us (using one of the payment methods listed above), and before the transfer has been completed, we can simply refund your money back to you. See what is required to complete the refund for your payment method below.

ACH Direct Debit

ACH Direct Debit refunds are automatic, so we don't need any details from you.

Your money will need to clear with TransferWise before we can refund it. As soon as it reaches us, we can simply send it back to the sending account via ACH.

It will take 2 working days maximum to arrive back to your account.

Domestic Wire Transfer

If you wish to refund your domestic wire, you can cancel your transfer on your profile. Our first action will be to ask our bank to reject this transfer.

If this is unsuccessful, we'll contact you and request the following details of your sending account:

- Account holder name
- ACH Routing Number
- Account Number

We can then refund your money via ACH. It will take 2 working days maximum to arrive back to your account.

SWIFT International Transfer

If you wish to cancel a transfer that you have paid for using SWIFT bank transfer, we need the following details to send your money back to you:

- Account holder name
- Bank code (BIC/SWIFT)

The refund will take 5 working days maximum to arrive back to your sending account.

ACH Electronic Payment

If you have sent your money to us via ACH electronic payment, we simply require your ACH account details to send it back to you:

- Account holder name
- ACH Routing Number
- Account Number

The refund will take 2 working days maximum to arrive back to your sending account.


If your money has been sent to us via check, it will be refunded to you by our bank in the US. We will not require any details from you.


What's the "Electronic / check routing number (ACH)"?

The "Electronic/checking routing number (ACH)" is the routing number used for local, ACH transfers between banks in the US. It can be usually found on the bottom left of the bank account’s check book.

Many of the bigger banks in America list this routing number on their support pages, linked to below.

Please note, this information is generic advice provided purely for reference. Please always ask the recipient to double-check their bank account details.


If your bank isn't listed here, just ask them for the routing number needed to receive an ACH transfer from another US bank.
