USD Transfers

This FAQ contains everything you need to know about sending money to the USA through TransferWise.

We currently have the following daily and yearly limits on transfers From USD*:

Private individual - $50,000 per day and $250,000 per year
Business - $250,000 per day and $1,000,000 per year

TransferWise Fee See pricing page We have tailored pricing for transfers from USD, so you can check the fees in more detail here.
Delivery time 1-2 working days within US After payout. Please keep in mind that TransferWise can take up to two working days to convert your money after receiving it.
Maximum amount (per transfer) £1 million in USD Upper limit is equivalent of £1,000,000 in USD at the current mid-market rate.
Countries we can send to USA / some countries outside of US For Further Credit payments to U.S. accounts are not recommended.

Reference Yes 10 character maximum, 5 character minimum
Required Details    
Recipient Full Name Yes When sending to individuals, please include first name and surname. There is an 18 character limit. Please use only standard Latin letters (a-z).
Recipient Full Personal Address Yes If your recipient is a business, we'll need the business address.
Recipient Electronic / Check Routing Number Yes You can see where your recipient can find their routing number here.
Recipient Account Number Yes Varies in length, always only numbers.
Amount Lock Transfers Yes The currency you're sending from must also be able to send fixed amounts. Please see our other currency FAQs more information.

Transfers to brokerages and intermediary banks No We can only send money to an account that is a final destination of the transfer.
Accepted bank accounts Checking and saving accounts Please note that some businesses may not accept payments via a third party.
Sending USD to an account outside of US  Yes, to some countries Please note the fees, delivery time, required recipient details and pay out method will differ for these transfers. More info.

Time for deposit to reach TransferWise* 1-4 working days, depending on how you send money Check here which payment method is best.
Maximum amount (per transfer) $50,000 (Personal) Limit for ACH Bank Debit payments is $10,000 (per order/per 24 hours), all other payment methods support up to $50,000 per personal transfer and  $250,000 for business transfers.

How to send money ACH Direct Debit Debit/Credit card payments are available in licensed states only. SWIFT available for payments from outside the US. More information on each payment method can be found by clicking the links to the left. You can see a guide on which is best here. Additional sending fees Your bank is likely to charge for Domestic Wire and SWIFT Transfers Typically these fees are $15-30, but vary depending on your sending bank. You can check with them to find out their standard fee for wire and SWIFT transfers.
Availability Widely available From all US states. USD can be received from outside the USA via SWIFT payment only.
Additional Requirements    
Recipient's full address Yes -
Your SSN/ID verification Yes An SSN is requested from every customer sending from USD. If you don't have one, our system will ask you for a bit more info and to upload an ID document issued outside of the US.
Guaranteed Rate Yes For payments from USD, the exchange rate is fixed providing we receive your money before 16:00 EST the following working day. With ACH Bank Debit payments, the rate stays locked beyond this period providing a 'successful' attempt is made before 19:00 EST the following day.
Amount Lock Transfers (in) No Providing the conditions for the 24 hour rate fix are met, the guaranteed rate would theoretically provide a fixed amount. However, please keep in mind that if the conditions aren't met, a fixed amount is not guaranteed.

USD Refunds

If you cancel your transfer from the US after you've sent your money to us, and before the transfer has been completed, we can refund your money back to you. See what's required to complete the refund below.

ACH Bank Debit

ACH Bank Debit with TransferWise before we can refund it. As soon as it reaches us, we'll send it back to the account it came from via ACH.

It'll take 2 working days maximum to be back in your account.

Domestic Wire Transfer

If you want us to refund your wire, you can cancel your transfer on your profile. We'll ask our bank to reject this transfer.

If this is unsuccessful, we'll contact you and request the following details of your sending account:

- Name of the account holder
- ACH Routing Number
- Account Number

We'll refund your money via ACH. It'll take 2 working days maximum to be back in your account.

SWIFT International Transfer

If you want us to refund a  SWIFT payment, we need the following details to send your money back to you:

- Account holder name
- Bank code (BIC/SWIFT)

The refund will take 5 working days maximum to be back in your account.

ACH Electronic Payment

If you've sent your money to us via ACH electronic payment, we just need your ACH account details to send it back to you:

- Account holder name
- ACH Routing Number
- Account Number

The refund will take 2 working days maximum to be back in your account.


If your money has been sent to us via check, it will be refunded to you by our bank in the US. We won't need any details from you.
