From the website of the Government of Kerala Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund
“Kerala is in the midst of an unprecedented flood havoc. The calamity has caused immeasurable misery and devastation. Many lives were lost. Hundreds of homes were totally destroyed and many more were damaged. For the first time in history, 27 dams in the State had to be opened. Never before had the State witnessed a calamity of this scale. In the fight against the flood, we have braved the odds.
Now it is our duty to help the affected rebuild their lives. The path to recovery can be long & arduous, but you can make a difference by joining the rebuilding efforts. Contribute generously to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund.”

We got to the office this morning to find some panicky messages in our inbox. Over the weekend, exactly 981 transfers had been made to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund, averaging 7,355 INR (82 GBP) per transfer.
Why the panic? Because under the Reserve Bank of India’s Rupee Drawing Arrangement (RDA), charity donations are not allowed for inward remittances to India.
Working with our banking partner in India, we were able to make an exception given the circumstance. And to help support the relief effort, we’re giving all customers who donate to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund through TransferWise a free transfer up to 100 GBP (or the equivalent in another currency) on your next transfer.
Please note that charity donation exception only applies to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund.
Because we’d need to know who is making the donation in order to apply the free transfer, and we won't know till after.
82 GBP is the average donation amount.
On Friday, 7th of September 2018, we’ll identify all customers who’ve made a transfer to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund, and we’ll apply the free transfer up to 100 GBP (or the equivalent in another currency) to their accounts.
