What’s a SWIFT Code?

A SWIFT code, which is sometimes also called a BIC (Bank Identifier Code) is a unique code used by banks to identify individual financial institutions all over the world. Since every institution has a unique SWIFT/BIC, it will direct information and international transfers to a specific bank, down to the branch if necessary. Sending or receiving money internationally requires having the correct SWIFT/BIC for the recipient’s bank.

A SWIFT code contains 8-11 characters, formatted like this: AAAABBCCDDD. AAAA: Bank code

BB: Country code

CC: Location code

DDD: Optional branch code

What’s the difference between a SWIFT code, a BIC, an IBAN and a routing number?

SWIFT codes are used to identify specific, individual banks all over the world. An IBAN, which stands for International Bank Account Number, is used to identify individual bank accounts, not the banks and financial institutions themselves, and is only used in the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Hungary. A routing number is similar to a SWIFT code in that it identifies a specific bank, but is only used in the US.
